April update

April 2nd, 2013 at 07:05 pm

Paid $3895.43 in principal over this past quarter.

Started planning in earnest to sell home. Collected boxes and wrapping paper, contacted some plumbers, returning borrowed items to people.

House equity is, for the first time since 2008, at 65%.
Am confident now I can put $200K downpayment on next home. Credit union no longer allows bridge loans, so we will live in extended stay quarters for 2-3 months.

I'd been stewing in frustration and hopelessness for weeks, but this past weekend had some epiphanies in store for me:
- renewed energy with the longer hours
- the UFYH tumblr tag (Unf*ck Your Habitat), easier and more motivating than FlyLady

I have overspent for both February and March. Oddly, I do not much care. Perhaps it is due to the market value rising, or that I expect some short-term fiscal pain between now and the sale of the house. I've budgeted $18000 for keeping up both mortgage and rent, replacing toilet and water heater, staging the house, moving and storage expenses.

Found 64 cents nearby on Friday. Whee!

I have ready access to ALOT of boxes at work. If you need some, let me know.

I'll have to check out the site because I got totally unmotivated by Flylady LOL

JulieA: you too? I'd subbed to FlyLady for years but when they went to 12+/day missives of testimonials, sales pitches along with the useful stuff without categorizing them for easy filtering, they lost me. Since doing UfYH I feel like everyday I do something and toss away crap is a success.

baselle: Heh, I asked on FreeCycle and crickets chirped. I responded to some craigslist postings and the people were MORE THAN WILLING to give me boxes. I lucked into someone who had a major fire in his house and had just moved back after the restorers took care of it. I have now over 30 boxes with some wrapping paper. Maybe the boxes that fit file folders and books or smaller items would be useful: does your source have a good supply?

SecretarySaving: My planning for the first month is to declutter and pack away things I will not be needing for six months, like Christmas decorations and winter wear (although it did snow on the 1st day of spring here!), FreeCycling and having a garage sale. Come to think of it I may order a gallon of Dr Bronner Sal Suds to get the area as clean as I can without poisoning welcome little creatures.

I am also getting storage space, gluing here, filling there, painting the doorframes, touching up some paint areas. We have, since I posted, chatted in person with our real estate agent who advised us to start looking now for an interim place (possibly 2-6 months). Next month I look at floor refinishers. Hope to be out sometime between May 30 and June 15, with house going up for sale third week of June. I am sure I am missing eight hundred things, but the agent has identified someone who can help us fill in the gaps.

Are you still planning to move up this way?

LuckyRobin: Right now it's looking like "one town away from" Seattle, as I will want to retrain for my next career, and I like having borrowing privileges from one of the busiest library systems (our county, not Seattle). I personally would love Bellingham because it looks flat enough to bicycle, it's twenty minutes to White Rock (this is big for me), and when I bring in a second income I'd have Wonderland, Michael's books and Village Books as dependents. Ideally we'd have a cute house, with maybe a small yard, and I'd buy my first ever snow shovel. I'm already sick of shootings here: you have 5% of the shootings per capita there compared to Seattle, and half as many burglaries. But it's not just my decision. The best I can say is "I don't know."
