now we are six

June 7th, 2012 at 04:03 pm

Possibly yesterday it was my blogoversary. I am not sure. Could have been Saturday.

What I am celebrating today: I succeeded in paying off the roof from the Home Equity Line of Credit. I borrowed $3500 last June and here we are back at $13400.

Summer Reading: Anna Karenina, Nightmare Abbey. Finished The Sisters Brothers: I started it before May 30, and found the violence hard to take after Wednesday. I didn't have as much problem with the violence in Lady, Go Die!, the sequel to Mickey Spillane's _I, The Jury_.

I may try collecting spare change to pay for the higher escrow payment (higher real estate taxes). By collecting I mean beyond what falls out of pants in the washer and dryer. My kid is pretty good about wading into water pools downtown to fish out cash. You should see how surreptitious we are at the Butchart Gardens and Kubota Gardens. I need to find new places. I've read that vending machines are good but I don't see many of them. Maybe I will try those at Safeway. I also look under photocopiers. Places to try: parking lots, bars, fast food outlets (not likely).

Fast food -- we looked in my kid's science notebook and saw a table of "what I know about fats" and "what I learned about fats" and half the notes were diatribes against McDonald's. I never taught my child to hate McDonald's, but I never took him there other than for preschooler birthday parties. The adults we know think it is strange for a child to be that vehement in actively disliking a fast food chain and I agree. He doesn't feel this way about Wendy's or A&W.

I have my rules about fountain change...I don't pick it up. Smile However, there is a small coin pool near Eagle St in the Sculpture Park. Full up in there.

The safeway coinstars are hit and miss. I feel a little queasy about hitting them, but when you are dumping change inside it the screen tells you over and over again to pick up what collects in the slot... well, you get over it. Last week I pulled $3.29 from one. Escalators are surprisingly good, so is the space between the bus seat and the wall of the bus.

We went to Children's Hospital today but I have only one cent from the tops of the vending machines. DS checked the coin return slots. We may try the parking lots of the pull-tabs casinos in Shoreline.

I knew Baselle would chime in on the coins! She's my inspiration. Now that the university has changed over the parking meters, it's no good there.
Here's an ethical question: You are checking out at the supermarket. There was no one in front of you when you got there, but there are coins in the little change thingie. Whose is it?

The coins belong to my kid -- he will see them before I do and he's a nimble critter.

Ha! I knew there'd be an answer.

The little darling likes also to go to the Customer Service counter to check the jackpots on various lotteries and let me know what the highest one is.

Way to go! I am working on paying my small business taxes off, but not making much headway, as I am a full-time writer now, due to the car wreck, and Amaaon doesn't pay until 60 days out.

In Bulgaria, you do NOT try to take the change left from the previous customer, or it could lead the cashier to try to take your hand off with a nail file. Of course, the economy is a lot different over here, too. Also, I fear that it might be considered an act of treason to concoct any sort of diatribe against A&W. McD's and Wendy's? Have at it... but some of my fondest childhood memories involve root beer floats at A&W. Smile Congrats, nice to have the insurance that the roof is paid off and you can get cracking on the rest of that balance! Good luck, and I wish you much change.
