Another goal

December 5th, 2007 at 06:18 pm

to become a person whose intrinsic worth is RECOGNIZED AND APPRECIATED more than the money she is able to give to/earn for other people. I'd like to be valued for my me-ness, rather than sought out near all the time as a potential client.

"I don't want to hang out with you, but I want you to come to my Pampered Chef parties. I don't want to hang out with you but I want you to come to my party so you can give me a gift that I won't bother sending a thank-you card for, and make other people think I am really popular. I don't want to put my real age or my real interests other than my photo studio on MySpace.com, but I am Requesting you Add me as a Friend because you have a kid and live in the area. You don't mean anything more to me than a measure of my marketing success. I'll claim on public forums that despite your 25% or 28% tax bracket and that 80% of your income is outgo that you are a big drain on the American economy but I'm not going to lead you to what I think you need to learn or be so you can be 'as educated about US and world history as' the American citizen claiming all immigrants are a drain on the economy. You need to learn about and study our Constitution so that when you become a citizen your nominal vote can go to a party determined to dismantle it; otherwise you are a drain on the US economy."

Doy... dur... my only value is commoditized and as a potential customer... I feels oh-so-validated in dis reel gud consumer culture...

Amen. This seems particularly noticeable as being a young mom. Why does everyone I know want to sell me crap? Why do I find it extremely tacky that our playgroups are filled with excessive birthday parties and a sales party every weekend??? Everyone else seems happy enough with this arrangement (regardless if they are filthy rich or utterly and completely broke). I am completely disgusted. I signed up to find playmates for my kids.
Not to be another dollar sign.

But yeah, I don't remember the last time I attended a "parental group" event without someone selling something. You can't even go to Toddler Time at the community center or to the library story time without getting some sales catalog shoved down your throat.

People have been you. Well, this may be cheap and easy for me to just say this as a voice on the internet, but you seem like just the kind of person I would like as a real life friend. You think, you evaluate, you educate yourself, you are reflective, you read interesting things, you look at the long term, you are concerned with not just personal but wider ethics, you are not just satisfied with any kind of trendiness that I can see. How could I not like you?

People have been "thingifying" you, I meant to say above. They probably have not been you. Smile

Joan pretty much summed you up just right, PG. Maybe that's why I like reading your blog - you write what (believe it or not) many of us are secretly musing about.

Thankfully, I'm lucky enough to actually have real life friends who think, evaluate, reflect, question, aren't self absorbed, etc. We meet every Friday for Margarita's and mexican food and split the bill fairly.

Too bad you're not in the area.

Just knowing that you live in Seattle makes me proud and happy.
