Windows Project Guessing

March 8th, 2007 at 09:55 pm

Eight windows, two of them very large (living room). Guessing $375 - $500 for each window, plus tax, plus 15% for contingencies: $5000.00. Somehow I sense it'll be much more. The two windows in our bedroom cost $2000.

I can risk $6000 from the HELOC.
Told Lord and Master I'd feel better with $5000 in savings (not locked up in CDs), and having the tax bill paid prior. I want at least one-third of the cost available in cash before going forward with the work.

low U-factor, under 0.35
high solar heat gain coefficient
argon gas fill

west windows: three
east window: one
-- SHGC lower than 0.55

south windows: two
-- SHGC high
-- U-factor under 0.35

I don't know how to get technical information from the manufacturers' websites: I'm looking at Marvin, Lindal and Andersen.

I replaced 21 windows (standard size), 3 entry doors, 4 basement windows and 3 storm windows in the garage for about $13,000. You should be able to request products catalogs with the technical info from the manufacturer's website .

Do your local installers give free estimates?

Is this work you're going to do yourselves or have done?

*LuxLiving: We're going to have it done. I should ask the local places if they do free estimates. I stopped into the place I prefer, and they went to the manufacturer's website for technical information.
