AAAAUGH! Gas bill!

December 18th, 2007 at 03:27 am

So here's me in August: blahblahblahwindows
September: blahblahblahwindows
October: blahblahblahwindowsandroofinsulation
November: blahblahblahroofinsulation
December: blahblahinsulationONEHUNDREDTHIRTYONEDOLLARS?!?

Didn't any one notice at the natural gas utility that I spent a five-digit figure on windows and a coupla hundred dollars on insulation so I could SAVE MONEY?!? I wash in cold! I keep the temperature at 68F at home, and 58F at night. I clean the filters every five-six weeks.

Hehehe, poor Paulette. How I do feel your pain.

Which begs the question, were you and your family any warmer????

We've also spent dollars on the windows. Our bills haven't been noticebly less, but we have been a whole lot warmer.

Geee, it feels like a girl can't win sometimes!! Maybe we'll recoup part of our outlay when and if we ever sell our homes??

So was that the usual bill? Lower? Higher? Any improvement?

Well sounds like not the improvement you expected (if any). What a let down.

Well, okay, we are warmer, luxliving. My feet no longer cramp up from being on cold wood for most of the evening. The cost this winter of natural gas, with delivery charges and conservation programs and taxes comes up to $1.07/therm.

My goal is to spend less in the winter months on heat than what a southerner would spend on air conditioning and electricity in the summer months.

I take solace knowing I no longer have a 50-year-old oil furnace. What I would have paid then staggers the Northwestern mind.

MonkeyMama, I should call the utility and ask if I saved anything this month. Our usage is exactly what it was last year, and admittedly we do have a stay-at-home worker, which saves us 66% of our transportation gas costs... or should I type 'redistributes' it?

Do you have last year's bill covering the same period to get an idea what your bill might be this year without the improvemnets you made?

Our per therm cost including taxes is $1.28. The gas bill yesterday was $138.50. Zero insulation and nowhere to put any, but good windows. We keep it at 64-65 day & night, though yesterday I tried nudging it down to 63. (I'm home all day.)

Ours was about $110 this month, and we have a 1 bedroom apartment. We do have very old and leaky windows and doors, and even adding weather stripping doesn't help with the bill. Although I do ned to get off my butt and do that again this year. And hang the heavy quilt back up over the extra door. Crud, I forgot about that. Anyways we keep the heat lowish during the day but completely shut it off every night at bedime.

Don't look at the $$ for the gas. Look at the consumption. The price of gas went up from last year. Did you actually use less???

Not to be a party pooper (REALLY!) but I'm not surprised. That's why back when you were thinking about doing solar and windows the suggestion was to do the windows first and then see where you stood.

Like everyone above has mentioned you are probably 1) warmer and 2) the cost of gas went up while you are likely using less. Same thing happened to me with new windows only now I have to contend with a boiler that's on it's last, last, last legs and so the indoor temp needs to be adjusted up to levels I would NEVER go near. Oh well, I was hoping to keep from spending the 4K for a new boiler just one more winter and now I fear it will cost me in the end. There's frugal and then there's stupid.

Give it till spring, PG. You'll see your biggest savings during the milder winter months. Right now we all just want to be warm.
