Unusually lax or distracted about finances

June 3rd, 2013 at 06:34 pm

For the second time ever in my household's history, I paid the mortgage late. Two days late, so hoping for no penalty. I thought I paid it on Saturday online, then I got distracted with about six open tabs on my browser, and it timed out.

I suspect my brain needs more training on how to focus on more than a handful of numbers going down at a time.

My next challenge is to live on $50 a day for twelve days.

Nice to see Paulette's smiling face again!

Curious about what you include in your $50. per day challenge.

Does your bank's system let you create a payment dated for one business day in advance of due date? That may help you avoid tiny errors. I know some vendors have nasty fees and even increase interest rates if you pay on a Saturday or Sunday.

@snafu my FI's system does let me pay my bills online ahead of time or on time. I've been using it well for years, works great for utilities and credit card bills especially and this weekend was an unusual blip. My mortgage account is probably the least fabulous, as it takes days to process and it's done by a third-party processor in New Jersey. I'd been racking up credit card charges: family photos, oil change, home improvement, Father's Day, Mother's Day, birthday gifts, fish and meat purchases, and didn't want to look at any of that, and succeeded in not looking at any of that for two weeks. I did pay it all off today, before finance charges.

I don't know if it's connected but the more I go outside and find other things to do and lighten up on my weight and outlook, the less I care about my finances as of late. I know normal people can manage both things well.

Here let me hijack my own comment thread.
$50/day: food including cat stuff, transportation, entertainment, incidentals - stamps, field trip expenses, Target bill.

Oh man, I'm in a similar boat - its either SPEND with a little save or SAVE with a little spend. Good luck on the $50/day. I'm guessing its an average?

FYI, thank you for coming to my open house! We shoulda done a couple of pushups together - you know I have the space and we could have inspected the carpet tile a little more closely. Big Grin!

@baselle I'd need a geezer bar to pull myself up after the pushups! Thanks for the nudge to renew my exercise. I just returned to the library _You Are Your Own Gym_ by Mark Lauren, a resistance training (no berets though) manual for women with no equipment other than interior furniture and doors.

I hope there is a grace period on that mortgage. Otherwise, Id be calling with an explanation and asking for a refund of the fee!
